how it all begain

It was Wednesday the 29th of May 2013 (only days after my 13th birthday) when my mum first noticed that my right shoulder was more prominent than my left, none of us really knew what was going on but we decided that I should get it checked out by a doctor.  So the next morning my mum and I went to the doctors and they had a look. In the end that they said I had to go to the hospital to have an x-ray because I may have scoliosis. Of what I recall I don’t remember feeling upset or scarred just happy that I’d miss some more of school. I had no clue how to even say scoliosis never mind say what it was. On the Friday I went to have an x-ray done. They let me see the results and you could clearly see that there was a curve and they diagnosed me with scoliosis. After that I went and got a new top from new look for my best friend’s birthday party which was happening that night, we camped in her back garden and I experienced no back pain what so ever. I did tell my friends about my back and it turned out that one of them had the same condition as me. We talked more often about our backs and now we are best friends, it really helps if you know someone who’s going through the same situation as you (if you would like to talk about it to me I’d be more than happy to listen J ).

Introduction

Hi my name is Lauren Grace; I am 14 years old and have scoliosis. For those for you who don’t know scoliosis is a curvature of the spine and effects girls and boys of any age however it is fairly common in young teenagers of around 12 to 15.  I love to dance and attend dance classes two times a week and I used to do a lot of swimming but I have recently stopped out of choice.  Two days ago (6th of June) I had to go to the hospital about my back, I had an x ray and learnt that my degree of curvature was 58, as you may know this is quite bad so I will have to undergo surgery within the next six months. The point of writing this blog is so that I can tell other kids just like me that scoliosis is not a negative but a positive and we must show it that it will not defeat us.
